Summer Pet Care Tips

Summer is right around the corner, and your pet needs to be prepared just as much as you! In the heat and hubbub of summer vacation, your pet’s safety could be at risk. Here are some summer pet tips:

Watch the heat. Your pet is just as influenced by heat as you. Don’t take your dog for a walk or leave them outside on very hot day. Same with cats! Let them come into your air-conditioned home, or at least the cool garage. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink as well.

Keep bugs away. Cut your grass short so minimize the amount of fleas and ticks in the yard. Watch out for fertilizer, as it can be harmful to your pet. Talk to your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention.

See if your pet needs sunscreen. Yep, your dog might need sunscreen! Check with your vet to see if you have a breed that needs extra sun protection. Do not use sunscreen or insect repellents that are not designed specifically for use on animals.

Practice water safety. Though it might be fun to bring your dog on a trip to the lake or river, you must keep a close eye on them while they’re in or near the water. Look into a doggie life preserver to keep them safe.
